Resourceful Thinking For An Innovative Roof Salford College collaborated with Bardsley Construction Ltd and Downs Variava Architects on the roof design, with roofing subcontractor, RCS Roofing & Cladding, appointed to carry out the installation. Ash & Lacy supplied 800m2 of Ashzip 400, factory manufactured to maximum sheet lengths of 9.6m to create a low pitched hipped roof, as stipulated in the design brief. The sheets were finished with a PVDF coating in copper green to meet planning requirements. Mark Wardle, MD of RCS Roofing & Cladding, commented: “The pre-coated colour blended in well with the surrounding landscape. Ash & Lacy delivered great products on site.” Integral to the Ashzip roofing package is the Ashgrid spacer support system, which was also supplied together with 730m2 of 33/1000 walkable liner The combination forms a complete system, offering reliability and exceptional roofing performance on the ‘L’ shaped Resource Centre. John Walls, Estates Manager for Salford College, is happy with the new roof and with the quality of work delivered by all the contractors who took part in the programme. Commissioned by Salford College, which has over 10,000 students, the new Learning Resource Centre is part of a £2 million pound re-development programme for Worsley Campus. The objectives of the redevelopment are two-fold: to bring teaching facilities on par with the new millennium and to secure the College’s strategic aims of raising curriculum standards. The new facility has three main functions: on the ground floor there is a suite of rooms for Multimedia Academy Studies and a separate group of classrooms for the Childcare Academy. The first floor is the main Learning Resource Centre. Worsley Campus teaches a range of vocational courses from Animal Care, Art & Creative Industries, to Sports & Leisure Studies and Public Sector Business. The student in-take is a mix of school leavers, who make up the majority of the campus’ full time students, and older students who take on the bulk of the part time courses.
