Planting The Sporting Seeds With The Acorn Centre
An aesthetically striking 'wave' formed standing seam roof has been created by roofing and cladding
specialists, Ash & Lacy Building Systems for a £2.2million funded four-court sports hall, at the
Acklam Grange School in Middlesborough. Specified for its longevity and durability by Middlesborough
Council, the 1480m2 of Ashzip in plain mill aluminium was supplied in a range of straight and factory
pre-curved sheets.
Constructed by main contractor Miller Construction, the new sports hall is a welcome addition to the
school, providing a good opportunity for young people and the surrounding neighbourhood to develop
their sports skills. Funding came from the New Development Fund, New Deal Community, Middlesborough
Council and Acklam Grange School.
Ashzip standing seam is available in parallel and tapered aluminium; coated steel and copper sheets in
cover widths of 300mm and 400mm. Two mobile rollforming units provide nationwide coverage and offer the
option of manufacture in a factory environment or on site (depending on sheet lengths required and site
access). Complying fully with the stringent HSE requirements, the mobile rollforming units can be
suspended by crane for portable eaves level rolling.
Ashzip standing seam roofing sheets will self-curve to a radius of between 40-55 metres depending on
material, gauge and profile width. To achieve convex and concave curves to tighter radii, sheets can
be pre-curved on-site, or in a factory environment using mobile curving machines. To complete the range
of options Ashzip can be taper roll formed to create a radial roof on plan and provide an attractive
architectural feature.
Mr. Bates, Headteacher at Acklam Grange School commented: "The modern and innovative design of the sports
centre has provided our large school with a state-of-the-art P.E. and recreational facilities our pupils
thoroughly deserve."
