Visitors to the Channel island of Guernsey will have a bird’s eye view of Ash & Lacy’s architectural fabrication expertise following the completion of a contract by Hochtif UK to build a new £18 million Terminal Building at Guernsey Airport.

A number of products from the Ashfab range of architectural fabrications were installed by Buckinghamshire based WWR (UK) Ltd to create a high-tech front entrance to the new terminal which is designed to handle 1.25 million passengers a year.

Feature canopies at the arrivals and departures entrances/exits to the terminal are finished using Ashfab fabrications, all in a metallic silver powder coating to complement the building’s aluminium cladding and glazed frontage.

The brief by the States of Guernsey to architects Kensington Taylor was to design a ‘statement’ building that catered for a forecast increase in air traffic over the next 25 year period.  The resulting terminal draws heavily from aeronautical design, with the basic rectangular building softened by the introduction of curves, including a dramatic curved fuselage form to the upper floor balustrade.  High quality finishes to the main entrances were essential to achieving a memorable gateway to Guernsey, with Ashfab bespoke architectural fabrications helping to provide the high performance and flexibility required.

The new terminal building replaces the former terminal constructed in 1939 when the airport was built.  It features 12 check-in desks, shops, car hire facilities, lounges, a children’s play area, a bar, café and snack bar in a building with a new floor area of 6,880 square metres.
