The new car park at Birmingham International train station is showing off its contemporary new look to commuters, thanks to Ash & Lacy Building Systems. The multi-storey car park was constructed as part of Network Rail’s £90m initiative to provide additional car parking spaces at a number of stations on the west coast main line.
Seymour Harris Architecture, are the concept design architects on all MSCP projects on the West Coast Mainline; and specified using Ash & Lacy's AshTech rainscreen cladding panels to answer the complex and challenging design brief. The project features Ashtech panels in both silver and yellow, laid out at random to give the building a striking and unique finish.
Each panel on the project is raked and the vertical joints are all at different angles. This meant that there was virtually no repetition with each AshTech panel on the building and every one had to be produced individually and to a bespoke size and shape. Ash & Lacy's design team worked closely with Cladding Contractor, Gable UK and Main Contractor, Osborne, to finalise every detail.
The AshTech system offered the client the modern, clean lines they were seeking, along with a simple method of installation. Sean Matthews, Gable UK, commented, "Ash & Lacy assisted whenever asked to overcome site tolerance and programme issues. The whole team helped turn a complex design and manufacturing process into a simple installation exercise. We are designing another car park at present and will not hesitate to specify Ash & Lacy products again."
Ray Harriman, Managing Director, Ash & Lacy Building Systems, added, "We have worked with Gable UK several times over the years and have a good relationship and understanding of each other's requirements. The production process for this project was highly complicated and intricate with each panel being produced as a one-off. Our drawing team working closely with Gable UK meant we could do what we do best and execute this efficiently and precisely."
Ash & Lacy's AshTech has already been employed on Runcorn and Rugby Network Rail stations and looks set to be used on several others in the future. AshTech is an ideal product for such applications, due to its durable and low maintenance characteristics and superior aesthetics. Panel designs also easily integrate with other building elements such as louvres, doors, windows and atriums, to create a complete building façade.
The striking new car park at Birmingham International train station is now open for customers.
