Abercrombie Primary School in Derbyshire is enjoying its brand new site and school building, complete with Ash & Lacy AshZip™ roof. The new school was built to replace the existing Victorian Building which had become outdated and in need of extensive refurbishment.

Designed and developed by Derbyshire County Council (DCC), the school encompasses classrooms, teaching areas, staff offices, an assembly and sports hall, catering facilities and a nursery, as well as outdoor play areas.

The sloping nature of the site means that the roof of the building is highly visible from a good portion of the school grounds and surrounding area. The Project Architect therefore wanted a roof finish to complement the overall design. The Project team had previous experience of Ash & Lacy’s AshZip™ on an earlier project and decided it was an ideal solution to their requirements being modern, versatile and low maintenance with crisp clean lines.

AshZip™ is an ideal roofing material for buildings such as schools which have mixed uses, as it has high acoustic values to protect against rain-drumming in class rooms and also control noise and acoustics in sports halls; along with complete weatherproofing and exceptional insulation.

The AshZip™ used on Abercrombie School was supplied to site pre-sized and cut, with a powder-coat finish. Approved roofing contractor, Northern Cladding, which has worked with Ash & Lacy products on many occasions, was able to install the AshZip™ smoothly and easily so the school was built and open ready for term time. The council believes that the new facilities will help to raise standards and provide a better learning environment for the pupils.

DCC had previously specified AshZip™ on the Frederick Gent Secondary School replacement in Derbyshire and due to the success of that project Ash & Lacy were chosen again. Renowned for its durability, aesthetic properties and outstanding performance characteristics, it is now the preferred choice for numerous schools projects underway throughout the UK.

Ash & Lacy is well established in supplying solutions to meet the high levels of design input demanded to meet the needs of educational buildings; and now provide a ‘Building for Education Solutions’ brochure to highlight the various systems it offers, from standing seam, green roofs, rainscreen, fabrication services and refurbishment systems.

Abercrombie School, formerly known as St Helen’s Street School, was established in 1873 and since then has prided itself on it’s friendly and accepting environment where children feel happy and strive for high achievements. Their new school has helped the staff and pupils continue with this tradition.
