Project: Beatson Oncology Centre
Location: Glasgow
Product: AshZip and AshFab
Installer: Topek Roofing
Sector: Healthcare

The Beatson Oncology Centre in Glasgow has been granted a new home, with the help of Ash & Lacy Ashzip technology.  The Centre, which was formerly spread across two sites in the city, has been united as the West of Scotland Cancer Centre on site at the Gartnavel Hospital in Glasgow.

The scheme, which forms the largest non-Public Private Partnership hospital contract in Scotland, is the second largest cancer centre in the UK and the lead centre for the delivery of non-surgical cancer care in Scotland.  In line with such a prestigious scheme, Topek (BUR) Ltd, roofing contractors on the project, chose Ash & Lacy to provide over 2,500m² of Ashzip plain mill aluminium and silver galvanised Ashfab flashings, to create the dual-pitched roof for the project.

George Talbot of Topek (BUR) Ltd revealed that they had chosen Ash & Lacy over other recommended suppliers, due to their consistently high product quality and ease of use, along with exceptional after-sales service; “We use Ash & Lacy for 90% of all our roofing projects”, he added.

The site incorporates units of Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and Palliative Care, as well as in and out-patient wards, hi-tech scanning facilities, an education suite and a family information service; all housed in a new £100m state-of-the-art five-storey building.

An AshZip standing seam roof offers high aesthetic values, as well as outstanding weathertightness, both of which were compulsory for such a scheme.  Plain mill finish aluminium demonstrates excellent durability and stability, lasting the life of the building with no maintenance work required.

The plan for the West of Scotland Cancer Centre is based on detailed analyses of cancer trends, which predict that the incidence of the disease is set to rise by 5% per year; coupled with a worldwide shortage of cancer professionals.

The centre has provision for long distance TV linkage with other cancer specialists around the world, to create a dedicated network of oncology experts and achieve the highest standards in medical treatment.
