Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 1:29AM The Crowne Plaza Hotel at Manchester Airport has utilised Ash & Lacy Building Systems to supply their Rainscreen Cladding System.
The £3.5million major refurbishment scheme, is aimed to help reduce the damage caused by exposure to weather over time and give the Crowne Plaza a modern re-vamp.
The four storey hotel was originally constructed using pre-cast concrete panels retained by steel mesh to stop spalling concrete from falling onto the car park area below. However, due to the effects of carbonation, the concrete was in need of repair.
West Midlands based, SPV Roofing and Cladding who have extensive experience of solving roof and cladding problems were appointed to carry out the refurbishment.
SPV used Ash and Lacy’s Ashtech Rainscreen Cladding System for its ability to prevent damage caused by exposure to the weather. The AshTech system is based on well proven rainscreen design principles and prevents the weather from reaching the existing concrete structure.
Aesthetics are equally important to gain a competitive edge over other hotels. The AshTech Cladding panels are exceptionally flat, creating a clean, symmetrical, appearance which will help to attract visitors from Manchester Airport.
Ash & Lacy supplied over 4,000m2 of Ashtech Rainscreen Cladding finished in Silver Metallic and Smoke Silver with factory cranked corners, an extra aesthetic feature made possible by folding the Alucobond.
Alcan’s Product Manager, Graeme Hopkins termed the flexibility of the material as ‘Origami in metal.’ Three large roof plant rooms are also clad with AshTech panels.
Another major consideration for the Crowne Plaza Hotel is the management of noise pollution from the surrounding areas and vibrations caused by high winds and rain. An impressive benefit of choosing ACM panels is that it offers an average airborne sound transmission loss of 25 dB and has superior vibration dampening capabilities.
The composite panel skins were fabricated from ACM (Aluminium Composite Material) which is highly resistant to corrosion. Manufactured by Alcan under the brand name Alucobond, the ACM comprises two 0.5mm laminated aluminium sheets which are bonded to a 3mm plastic core to create a strong lightweight and durable material, an extremely important factor when adding cladding to an existing structure.
