Hundreds of millions of pounds have been invested in schemes across the city of Brighton, in a bid to create an enhanced visitor destination. A hundred million pounds has been invested into The New England Quarter, managed by J. Sainsbury’s with participation from Barratt Homes. The scheme features a prestigious urban village comprising two hotels, commercial and retail spaces, a college, community centre, Sainsbury’s supermarket and a number of distinctive residential properties displaying characteristic curved AshZip standing seam roofing from Ash & Lacy Building Systems.

The 15 acre site, which is situated next to Brighton Station, forms the gateway to the city and is one of the first visual sites for visitors arriving by train. With the aesthetical impact and quality being of such major importance on this scheme, it was no surprise that Ash & Lacy were chosen by roofing contractors Allan Roofing to add vitality and style to this largely pedestrianised development.

Over 12,000m² of curved AshZip was employed on the scheme, mainly in conjunction with Barratt Southern Homes who were responsible for the 355 new homes on site. Properties range from town houses to warehouse flats, studio suites and apartments.

Luke Wessely, Managing Director of Allan Roofing revealed that Ash & Lacy were chosen based upon previous experiences of their technical expertise and first class products, delivery and service. ‘We have been more than satisfied with them several times in the past, and they came up with a very competitive quote’ Luke added.

The scheme used incorporated Ash & Lacy’s full height halters which made for fast, accurate and consistent setting out prior to the laying of the top sheets. The strength, lightness and ease of handling Ashzip sheets meant they could be easily manipulated and positioned to ultimately create a roof that is both aesthetically pleasing as well as offering excellent longevity for the life of the building.

The aluminium sheets used on the New England Project were manufactured onsite in continuous lengths and applied directly to the roof structure, creating the stylish, curved roof profile which adds to the visual impact of the properties.

The sheets were then ‘zipped’, to create the characteristic weatherproof and wind resistant standing seam roofing for which AshZip is renowned.

Underlined by AshZip 400’s BBA certification, the system is designed to withstand the best and worst of the UK’s weather extremes whilst maintaining it’s high quality finish and thermal and acoustic performance levels.

The New England Quarter aims to enhance Brighton’s reputation as a centre of development for leisure and innovation.
