The state-of-the-art Lammas Leisure Centre in Sutton-in-Ashfield is open for business, featuring an Ashzip standing seam roofing system and Ashgrid spacer support system from Ash & Lacy Building Systems. Dame Kelly Holmes, double Olympic Gold medal winner, officially opened the centre and hailed it one of the best equipped leisure centres she had visited.
The leisure centre boasts a curved AshZip roofing system on four separate areas of the complex, each fully supported by an AshGrid spacer support system and Ash & Lacy perforated liner sheets to increase acoustic performance.
For the largest of the four roof areas, the AshZip sheets had to be site rolled, so Ash & Lacy provided their mobile rolling unit which was hoisted up to eaves level and the sheets rolled directly onto the roof.
Renowned for its outstanding aesthetic and performance characteristics, AshZip was specified by Construction Profiles of Birmingham. Paul Smith commented, 'We have used Ash & Lacy products on many projects over the years because we are comfortable with the installation and always happy with the performance. Ash & Lacy was also able to offer its design and technical assistance for the area of the leisure centre which housed the swimming pools, where we needed the correct powder-coated, roofing materials to tackle the chloride environment.
Ashfield District Council invested £16m in the new leisure facility which includes: an ice-skating rink; a six-lane, twenty five metres swimming pool; separate training pool; two glass-backed squash courts, four-court badminton hall and a hundred-station fitness suite. It also houses a six-lanes bowls hall and three group-exercise rooms, a crèche for centre users and provides car-parking for 200 vehicles.
Designed by national sports facility experts GLR Architects, the exciting new venue was constructed within 18 months and completed ahead of schedule. Graham Scaife, GLR, commented, 'The Practice has specialized in the design of Leisure Centres and Swimming Pools for over 30 years and have a good understanding of the key issues for the design of roofs over difficult environments. We were in touch with Ash & Lacy throughout the project and with our knowledge and their technical expertise we were able to provide the best solution for each different roof area.'
Operated by Sports & Leisure Management (SLM) under its ‘Everyone Active’ brand in partnership with Ashfield District Council, the facility operates a whole range of activities for children during term time and holidays, stay fit and get in shape for adults and keep fit for families!
