Project: Celtic Football Club Training Academy
Location: Lennoxtown
Product: AshZip 400 Aluminium Standing Seam System
Main Contractor: CCG Limited
Installer: Topdek
Sector: Leisure

The new multi-million pound training academy for Celtic Football Club was completed in July 2007 utilising AshZip 400 standing seam roofing system. The multi-million pound facility nestles at the foot of the Campsie Fells on the site of the former Lennoxtown Hospital.

The location of the Academy made the achievement of the architects roof design an interesting challenge due to access restrictions being combined with a roof slope of almost 55mtrs. Ash & Lacy solved this potential problem with the use of mobile roll formers, enabling the AshZip system to be site rolled by a mobile unit. The mono slope roofs to the main building could then be rolled at eaves by suspending the roll former by crane and rolling directly onto the roof in single unbroken run of 56mtrs.

Another challenge of the 4000sqm roof of the Academy was the complex issues of the internal environmental control. The roof itself effectively enclosed the hydrotherapy unit, fitness suite and indoor football pitch within a single construction. This then presented a wide range of humidities and thermal variances which were resolved by utilising a fully sealed walk-able lining system, and a fully continuous non-combustible insulation roll to a 0.25W/sqmK u-value.

The external roof finish was achieved using wholly recycled natural mill finished aluminium, which will require little to no maintenance for the duration of the building.

Unlike many conventional metal roofing systems the AshZip standing seam does not employ penetrative fasteners, and its side laps are self sealing without the need for proprietary sealant strips or mastics, therefore ensuring that throughout the building life the roof will remain watertight by design.

Installation contractor Topek Limited have a long standing relationship with Ash & Lacy due to the “quality and service offered by Ash & Lacy” commented Chris McCrory, adding “We use only Ash & Lacy when standing seam roofing is specified due to the superior product they offer, resulting in the great relationship that we have built with them.”

The Celtic Training Academy was officially opened in October 2007 and is now commissioned and fully operational as the headquarters for all Celtic FC’s activities, enabling them to concentrate fully on matters on the pitch with this state of the art facility!
