AshFix stainless steel fixings from Ash & Lacy Building Systems have been used in the development of a major new Black Country retail park.

Preparation of the one acre site at Bentley Bridge in Wednesfield, near Wolverhampton, began with demolition and remediation. The owners, Sun Life and Assurance, employed main contractor Bowmer & Kirkland Ltd to oversee the construction of 15 retail units to complement the existing Leisure Park and neighbouring village centre.

The client had stipulated warrantable fasteners that would last at least 25 years. Roofing subcontractor, Sharkey & Co Ltd., recommended using Ashfix given that the quality of design and durability would meet the required life expectancy. Ash & Lacy supplied a large quantity of 304 grade stainless steel self drilling and tapping fasteners, Class A HP500 Butyl mastic sealants, EPDM fillers and foams to firmly bond with Kingspan composite panels to roof and walls.

The AshFix Bi-Metal 304 fastener is manufactured to meet stringent performance specifications. Standard carbon steel fasteners may corrode in harsh climates, especially when saline and sulphur dioxide is present in the atmosphere. Ash & Lacy are able to deter the oxidisation process by applying a special three part, organic based coating on the fasteners. The hexagonal shaped head gives extra stability and minimises sealing washer inversion.

Ash & Lacy not only provides an extensive range of building materials, but also excellent customer support, including same-day site support, an internal co-ordinator for advice and also on-site delivery checks to ensure that the correct quantity of materials has been delivered.

Nick Heath, Commercial Director at Sharkey acknowledges this, commenting - “Ash & Lacy provides a quality service and competitive price, with on-time delivery. The fasteners did the required job to a good standard.”

The commercial units are currently occupied by Argos, Boots, Dreams, Hobbycraft, Peacocks and more.

The regeneration project was in response to seeing a market need for a retail park. Planning permission was granted by the local council, as they recognised the development would offer Wolverhampton residents more retail choice and provide new job opportunities, with the long term effect of boosting the local economy.
