Ashzip Plays Leading Role In Derbyshire School Re-Development

The Ashzip Standing Seam Roofing System from Ash & Lacy was installed on the new teaching and leisure facilities at Frederick Gent School in DerbyshireA leading South Normanton Secondary School received £8.5million from Derbyshire County Council to re-build and refurbish parts of the building. The development includes a new Ashzip standing seam roofing system from roofing and cladding specialists, Ash & Lacy Building Systems.

4,000 sq metres of Ashzip 400 were installed on the newbuild areas of the school by Hickton Construction. Standing seam roofing systems have been specified on educational projects for a number of years as they offer a low risk roofing solution for both the client and building occupiers. Renowned for their durability, aesthetic properties and outstanding performance characteristics they are now the preferred choice for the numerous PFI/PPP (Private Finance Initiative/Public Private Partnership) schools projects underway throughout the UK. As part of the Ashzip standing seam roofing package Ash & Lacy also supplied 4,000 sq metres of walkable liner sheet with both plain and perforated absorbent linings to meet the necessary acoustic requirements.

Frederick Gent School is well-recognised in the area for its teaching of mathematics and ICT for 11-16 year olds. Funding went into demolishing large parts of the building, replaced by a new teaching block, and more classroom spaces for teaching science, ICT and drama. Money from the Government’s New Opportunities Fund paid for a new sports hall and outdoor games area.

The Ashzip standing seam system is available in parallel and tapered aluminium; coated steel and copper in cover widths of 300mm and 400mm. Two mobile rollforming units provide nationwide coverage and offer the option of manufacture rollforming units can be suspended by crane for portable eaves level rolling. Ashzip standing seam roofing sheets will self-curve to a radius of between 40-55 metres depending on material, gauge and profile width. To achieve convex and concave curves to tighter radii, sheets can be pre-curved on-site, or in a factory environment using mobile curving machines. To complete the range of options Ashzip can be taper roll formed to create a radial roof on plan and provide an attractive architectural feature.

The council believes that the new facilities will help to raise standards and provide a better learning environment for the pupils. The completed work has met their requirements.
