Ashzip roof for multi-million pound school


The new Deri View Primary School in Abergavenny, South Wales, has been completed with a striking curved Ashzip standing seam roofing system with a Merlin Grey finish from Ash & Lacy Building Systems. The school, built on the site of the former Llwynu Primary School, which it replaces, along with Croesonen Infants and St David's Junior School, features two roofs which are curved on plan and another two which are curved on section. To create a clean finish without any end laps part of the roofing system was roll formed on site in lengths of up to 40 metres and to provide support for the large bull nose fabrications, Ash & Lacy also designed and engineered a bespoke framing solution.

The site of the new development is in a highly exposed location, hence acoustic performance; airtightness and thermal performance were all paramount in the selection of a suitable roof system. To meet the acoustic requirements of the project the Ashzip standing seam roofing system was supplied with a perforated liner sheet to provide the required level of sound absorption. Architects, Willdig Lammie, based in Newport, specified the design requirements and were delighted with the results.

Design Manager Roger Mobley of WA Roofing, the company responsible for installation, commented: "I recommended using the Ashzip standing seam roofing system as I had researched the product and found the quality of the system to be first class as was the technical support. The prices were also highly competitive. Ash & Lacy had previously supplied us with fabrications for another project and the service was good, especially on the technical and delivery side."

The Welsh Assembly Government provided £5m funding for the school, along with the Big Lottery Fund and Monmouthshire County Borough Council. It is hoped that Deri View's success will be reflected upon the wider community of Abergavenny, with an adjoining integrated children's centre playing a major role in achieving this aim.
