Ashzip meets sport England specification
James Brindley High School in Tunstall, Stoke -on -Trent, has received a new hi-tech sports hall, complete with an Ashzip standing seam roof in plain mill aluminium from Ash & Lacy. In the project specification, particular attention was paid to the roof design in order to meet the acoustic and reverberation levels important for sports and leisure facilities.
It is essential that impact of rain noise is considered in the design of such roofs as it can increase indoor ambient noise significantly. The Ashzip standing seam roofing system was selected by Valent Roofing, the main roofing contractors, primarily because of its proven performance in applications where there is an enhanced acoustic requirement. To control reverberation and suppress ambient noise the 600 square metreroof featured a perforated absorbent lining below the mineral fibre insulation layer.. The school received over £700,000 from the New Opportunities National Lottery Fund along with design guidance from Sport England - the English Sports Council and distributor of Sport England National Lottery Funds.
Ashzip is available in parallel and tapered aluminium; coated steel and copper in cover widths of 300mm and 400mm. Two mobile rollforming units provide nationwide coverage and offer the option of manufacture in a factory environment or on site (depending on sheet lengths required and site access). Complying fully with the stringent HSE requirements, the mobile rollforming units can be suspended by crane for portable eaves level rolling. Ashzip standing seam roofing sheets will self-curve to a radius of between 40-55 metres depending on material, gauge and profile width. To achieve convex and concave curves to tighter radii, sheets can be pre-curved on-site, or in a factory environment using mobile curving machines. To complete the range of options Ashzip can be taper roll formed to create a radial roof on plan and provide an attractive architectural feature.
Ash & Lacy Sales & Marketing Director, Andrew Robertson, commented - "We are delighted that Ash & Lacy were recognised and selected as the key supplier on such a project with its exacting quality and performance requirements from such a well respected organisation as Sport England."
The arrival of the new sports facility is an attempt to increase extra-curricular activities for the pupils of James Brindley and to open up use to a further 1,400 residents of Tunstall. Mick Williams, of James Brindley High School confirmed that the sports hall has greatly increased the number of activities which the school are able to offer to pupils, outside school Youth Inclusion groups and the wider community, with the sports hall being fully booked every evening in the week by clubs such as Badminton, Taekwondo and a number of football teams.
