Ashjack Refurbishment Maintains Wall Structure
The BBA (British Board of Agrément) and LANTAC
approved Ashjack over-roof conversion system from Ash & Lacy, is a bespoke lightweight steel framing system
that is widely used as a refurbishment solution for failed flat roofs. Primarily designed to create a roof
pitch Ashjack is widely specified in public sector applications and has recently been employed in a social
housing project at Thurso Walk in Corby.
Corby Social Houses is a combination of tenanted and leased properties, consisting of 24 flats divided into
three blocks. Built in the 1960s, the houses featured flat roofs that were a popular solution at that time.
However, as is common in many flat roofing installations, inadequate drainage and the capacity for limited
water run-off led to significant deterioration of the roof structure. In addition to water damage, once
water penetrates the roof structure, it can reduce the performance of thermal insulation, causing a rise in
energy consumption and heating costs.
Recognising the problems tenants were experiencing, Corby Borough Council commissioned the roofs to be
refurbished. After extensive research, the Ashjack propped rafter over-roof conversion system was selected,
with Torclad appointed as the roofing contractor. Colin Mackie, Senior Maintenance Manager at Corby Borough
Council, specified Ashjack based on several factors: Ash & Lacy's reputation; their competitive pricing and
proactive approach to meeting a given specification.
Developed by Ash & Lacy in 1989, Ashjack was the first structural lightweight over-roof conversion system in the
UK. Quick and simple to assemble, Ashjack has provided a permanent refurbishment solution on buildings throughout
all sectors of the construction industry. From a commercial point of view the life of the building is considerably
extended, maintenance is reduced and the upgraded aesthetic properties add additional value to the property.
Supported by a network of experienced installers the Ashjack system is also ideal for use on new build projects
where it provides a lightweight alternative to timber trusses or heavy hot rolled sections.
